Why we celebrate

Cultural Significance

Birth of Ganesha

Goddess Parvati fashioned Ganesha from sacred clay and turmeric paste, breathing life into him as her devoted guardian — a reminder that divinity often begins in humble, earthen form.

Vighnaharta

Ganesha's elephant head symbolises wisdom and discernment; his large ears listen deeply, his small eyes focus keenly — he is invoked first to remove obstacles before any new beginning.

Sthapana to Visarjan

Across ten sacred days the idol is installed, revered daily, and finally immersed in water — a living metaphor for creation, attachment, and graceful letting go.

Modak & Offerings

Twenty-one durva blades, red hibiscus, and steamed modak sweets are offered — each representing gratitude, purity, and the sweetness of a life free from obstacles.

A Public Festival

Lokmanya Tilak transformed home worship into a Sarvajanik (public) utsav in 1893 — uniting communities across caste and class through shared devotion and cultural pride.

The Sacred Immersion

Visarjan returns the clay idol to the elements it came from, teaching that all forms are temporary while the divine essence — like Ganesha's blessing — remains eternal.

    Pran Pratishtha & Sthapana

    Idol installation with Vedic mantras invoking life-force into the murti, followed by the very first Aarti at 7:15 PM.

  2. Day 3 · Wed, Sept 16 · 12:30 PM

    Madhyahna Naivedya Aarti

    Midday offering of modak & fruits, with community members invited to participate in the Naivedya seva.

  3. Day 5 · Fri, Sept 18 · 7:00 PM

    Cultural Sandhya

    An evening of bhajans, classical dance, and children's performances celebrating devotion through art.

  4. Day 7 · Sun, Sept 20 · 1:00 PM

    Mahaprasad Seva

    Community meal offered to all visitors regardless of background — the spirit of Sarvajanik unity in action.

  5. Day 10 · Wed, Sept 23 · 4:00 PM

    Anant Chaturdashi Visarjan

    Grand farewell procession with dhol-tasha, culminating in the sacred immersion — "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lawkar Ya!"

Rituals & Guidelines

Reviewed for mythological accuracy by the organizing committee's cultural advisors.

Before Sthapana
Cleanse the space, face the idol toward the east or north-east, and light the first diya while chanting "Om Gan Ganpataye Namah" to welcome Ganesha's presence into the home or mandal.
Daily Aarti Etiquette
Remove footwear before entering the puja area, offer durva grass and red flowers with the right hand, and keep mobile phones silent during mantra recitation as a mark of shared reverence.
Eco-Conscious Visarjan
We encourage natural clay idols with water-soluble dyes and immersion in designated artificial ponds. Please avoid plaster-of-Paris idols and synthetic decorations to protect our rivers and lakes.
Prasad & Modak Sharing
Prasad is distributed after each Aarti — please form an orderly line, receive with both hands, and consume respectfully as it is considered a blessed offering, not ordinary food.
Dress & Decorum
Modest traditional or smart-casual attire is welcomed. Photography is permitted, but please avoid flash and disruptive movement during the main Aarti to preserve the sanctity of worship.
